Exploring Community Led Housing in Solihull

May 19, 2021 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

About the Event

Are you interested in the potential for community groups and organisations in Solihull to design, develop, own or manage their own homes?

Across the country, community groups and organisations are designing homes that are affordable, that meet their needs and build communities, not just houses. We’d like to see more of this happening in Solihull, so we’re co-hosting this workshop together with the Council. It will be an opportunity to hear about ‘the art of the possible’ demonstrated by existing community led housing projects, discuss why it could be an important part of the housing mix in Solihull and what the opportunities could be in the local context.

Everyone is welcome – maybe you are an individual, community group or organisation interested in housing solutions for your community, or perhaps you work for a potential partner organisation like a housing association or developer. The more the merrier.

We are keen to understand why you are interested in community led housing and what might help or hinder you in pursuing a project idea. Whether you are just starting to learn about it or have some ideas in mind or projects on the go. So we will encourage participants to share their views during the discussion.

The session will include:

  1. Scene setting by Austin Rodriguez, Head of Stronger Communities (Housing & Communities) at Solihull MBC
  2. Introduction to community led housing by Abi Ryan, Development Manager at West Midlands Urban Community Homes
  3. The Stourbridge PowerHaus and Stourbridge Community Land Trust story by Eddy Morton, Director of Stourbridge Community Development Trust
  4. Introduction to the local context and the opportunity for community led housing in Solihull by Mark Collyer, Policy and Engagement at Solihull MBC
  5. Priorities and support for communities and neighbourhoods at Solihull MBC by Sara Rooney, Strategic Development Manager for the Third Sector
  6. Q&A with plenty of time for discussion with all participants
