An Introduction to community led housing

Communities across the country are designing homes that are affordable, that meet their needs and build communities, not just houses. Housing developments and refurbishments range from eco-build housing, to supported housing, to affordable housing for young people and everything in between!
On 8th January, we hosted an online Introduction to Community Led Housing event, designed to share what community led housing is all about. We heard an overview from our Development Manager, Abi Ryan, as well as from our wonderful guest speakers about their journeys into community led housing and the organisations that they are part of. Thank you to our guest speakers for sharing their stories:
Linda Hines, Chair at Witton Lodge Community Association – Linda moved to Perry Common in 1977, having never worked in the community and never really understanding what those who did got out of it. Her home in Perry Common was one of 908 that had to be demolished in 1989. Linda became a Director of Witton Lodge Community Association in 1996 and is now Chair of the organisation. She has 28 years of experience enabling residents to get involved and feel the benefit of making a difference themselves and was awarded an M.B.E. in 2009.
Lima Zindani, 20/20 Housing Co-operative – Lima has been a resident of 20/20 Housing Co-operative in Moseley, Birmingham for the past 24 years. She spent 18 of those years on 20/20’s management committee and now works for Birmingham Co-operative Housing Services. She’ll be talking about the beauty of living in a co-op – more than just a home.
Karen Williams, Chief Officer at Bushbury Hill Estate Management Board – Bushbury Hill are a small housing organisation based in Wolverhampton – run by tenants, for tenants. Recently they’ve been busy creating lockdown memories, as well as making plans to build some new homes! Karen is also a board member on two national tenants organisations, who campaign for tenants’ rights and tenant management.
